When Should You Take Maternity Photos?
If you’re pregnant and starting to think about maternity photos, you’ve probably asked yourself the same question many moms-to-be do:
When is the best time to take maternity photos?
For many women, 28 to 34 weeks of pregnancy is a great time for a maternity session. Your belly is usually beautifully visible, while you may still feel comfortable enough to walk, move around, and enjoy your session.
But there’s no single perfect week for everyone. Every pregnancy is different, and how you feel matters much more than a specific number on the calendar.
What Is the Best Time to Take Maternity Photos?
As a maternity photographer, I usually recommend planning your session around 28–34 weeks.
By this point, your pregnancy is often beautifully visible, but many women still feel relatively comfortable moving around and enjoying an outdoor session.
That said, you don’t have to wait until a certain week to have beautiful maternity photos.
Some moms prefer to have their photos taken earlier, when their belly is a little more subtle. Others want to wait until the final weeks to capture a more pronounced pregnancy.
Your maternity session should work around you—not the other way around.
Why Is 28–34 Weeks Often a Great Time?
There’s a practical reason this window tends to work so well.
As pregnancy progresses, it’s completely normal to feel more tired or uncomfortable. A maternity photo session doesn’t need to be physically demanding, but if you’re hoping for photos walking along the beach, through a park, or with your partner, it can be easier to enjoy the experience while you still have some freedom of movement.
There’s also something special about this stage emotionally.
Your pregnancy feels very real. You can see your belly, feel your baby moving, and start to realize that this little person you’ve been waiting for will soon be here.
And that’s what I love photographing.
Not just your belly, but the person and the story behind it.
Can You Take Maternity Photos After 34 Weeks?
Absolutely.
A maternity session at 35 or even 36 weeks can be beautiful. Being further along doesn’t automatically mean it’s too late.
The key is simply to make the session work for how you feel that day.
We can walk less, take plenty of breaks, choose an easier location, or keep the session slower and more relaxed.
If you have any concerns about your pregnancy or physical comfort, your healthcare provider is the right person to ask. My job as your photographer is to make the experience comfortable and adapt the session to you—not to give medical advice.
When Should You Book Your Maternity Session in Delaware?
You don’t need to wait until you’re 28 weeks pregnant to start looking for a photographer.
If you’re planning maternity photos in Delaware, I recommend reaching out early enough to give yourself time to choose a date, location, and style that feel right for you.
This is especially helpful if you have a specific idea in mind, such as beach maternity photos at sunset or an outdoor session in one of Delaware’s parks or natural areas.
And you don’t need to have everything figured out before you reach out. We can talk about what you have in mind and find an option that feels natural for you.
What Is the Best Time of Day for Maternity Photos?
For outdoor maternity sessions, one of my favorite times is the hour before sunset.
The light is usually softer and warmer, creating a calm, natural feeling without harsh midday shadows.
Delaware gives us plenty of beautiful options for this kind of session—from beaches and parks to trails and open spaces.
But the best location and time of day should always take your comfort into account, too.
Your Pregnancy Doesn’t Have to Look a Certain Way
Maybe your belly is already very round. Maybe it’s smaller than you expected.
Maybe you feel beautiful and confident. Maybe some days you barely recognize yourself in the mirror.
All of that is part of pregnancy.
I don’t believe a maternity session should be about trying to turn you into someone else for a few hours.
I’d much rather photograph you as you are during this moment in your life: your partner’s hand resting on your belly, a quiet look between you, an unexpected laugh, or simply the two of you waiting for your baby together.
Because one day, these won’t just be photographs of your pregnancy.
They’ll be photographs of who you were before you met your child.
Expecting a Baby in Delaware?
If you’re looking for a Delaware maternity photographer and want natural, intimate photographs without stiff or complicated posing, I’d love for you to take a look at my maternity work and see how I approach these sessions.
You don’t need to know how to pose or feel comfortable in front of a camera.
I’ll guide you when needed and, most importantly, give you space to simply enjoy this moment.
Your pregnancy only lasts a few months. The photographs will last much longer.
